Egypt nears military coup. USS warships in Suez Canal
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Although I always take Debka with a grain of salt, the info is lining up with what we know is in the area) The arrival of US naval, marine and air forces in the Suez Canal's Greater Bitter Lake indicated that the crisis was quickly swerving out of control. debkafile's military sources report that the American force consists of the USS Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group of six warships. Helicopters on some of their decks are there to carry and drop the 2,200 marines of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit which has been bolstered by two special operations battalions. The flotilla has a rapid strike stealth submarine, the USS Scranton, which is designed to support special forces' operations. The US strike force has taken up position at a strategic point opposite Ismailia between the west bank of the Suez Canal and its eastern Sinai bank. It is poised for rapid response in the event of the passage of about 40 percent of the world's marine freights through the Suez Canal being threatened or any other extreme occurrence warranting US military intervention.

Allies Press U.S. to Go Slow on Egypt
WASHINGTON — As the Obama administration gropes for the right response to the uprising in Egypt, it has not lacked for advice from democracy advocates, academics, pundits, even members of the previous administration. But few voices have been as urgent, insistent or persuasive as those of Egypt’s neighbors.

0905 GMT: Essem el-Erian, a senior leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, has told reporters from The Guardian of London, "There is no compromise." He continued:
We reassess our position every day, maybe every hour. We give them some time to discuss … [Those around Mubarak] are arranging their affairs because he was a symbol of the regime and he was controlling them. They need some time. We give them this chance. A week.

The Turkish Prime Minister has told the US to tell Israel to butt out.
"Israel must under no circumstance interfere" in what is happening in Egypt, Turkish daily Hurriyet quoted Erdogan as saying on Monday.
The Turkish leader made the remark on the way back from Syria, where he attended the opening ceremony of a joint construction project, dubbed the "Friendship Dam."
Erdogan said he had asked US President Barack Obama and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou to intervene to stop a possible last-ditch effort by Israel to “turn the tide” against protesters demanding the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Mohamed el-Baradei, recognized by both the US and other foreign powers, who was absent from Egypt in the past 30 years, wants the top spot in the country.
But, do the Egyptian people want him and would he bring about change, which would go against the US agenda?
In this regard, Press TV interview s with Ralph Shoenman, author of the Hidden History of Zionism and expert on Zionist impact on the Middle East.

.. and here especially the final sentences:
Ralf Schoenman: The Muslim brotherhood knows all too well that in semi-colonial Egypt the ability to participate has to do with the role of the military and the role of money. Anatole France said famously that “a rich man and a poor man have an equal right to sleep under a bridge,” and in Egypt have nominally an equal right to take part of an election controlled by the military and the financial elite of the country. It's a charade it's a façade, that's why El-Baradei answers to Shimon Peres, Armitage and Brzezinsky - not to the people of Egypt. This is not an alliance for democracy; this is an alliance for stabilizing the old order.
The mass movement in Egypt represents 80 million people and above all the Egyptian working class. That working class, which is facing starvation; the working class that is capable of waging a general strike, which brought down the regime of the Shah (Iran) and the lessons of the Iranian revolution will not be lost on the people of Egypt. The smashing of the old order requires the engagement of the mass movement in its own name with its own program, freedom from imperial domination, control over the wealth of the economy of the country, etc.

More On the Mubarak Regime's Crackdown
Human Rights Watch have issued the following damning report on continuing abuses under the Mubarak regime.
While Washington seems content with a Suleiman led process of 'political dialogue' this is what his intelligence services have been up to. Note the alleged involvement of the military which claims to be neutral in all of this.Egypt: Investigate Arrests of Activists, Journalists
Military’s Arbitrary Arrests, Beatings Are Trademark of Interior Ministry Repression(Cairo, February 9, 2011) – The Egyptian government should order military police, army officers, and State Security Investigations officers to cease arresting journalists, activists, and protesters arbitrarily, Human Rights Watch said today. Army officers and military police arbitrarily detained at least 119 people since the army took up positions in Egyptian cities and towns on the night of January 28, 2011, and in at least five cases tortured them.
