or pressure spikes in the lines.
i'd be very curious to know what sort of regulators they use, how many of them are covering any given section of line at any given time, and how sensitive their blow-off valves are.
anyone with industry experience here?

Here is my take on this: residential leak not Industrial. gas mains leading to any structure have manual
shut offs at: users meter,at the street where branchs come off the main,at the source.
most all equipment using NG have numerous safety devices as required .
probable cause is broken line under ground:note NG pressure is usually in inch LBS. @ point of use, line PSI can be afew lbs.
If you have specific area u want covered let me know

Re: Another Gas Explosion
Cab, I have heard unverified reports that there have been problems with gasline pressure when the new "smart energy" or whatever they are called auto-regulation devices are installed in neighborhoods. What is your take on this?

Hi bird,
I dont think it' a reg. issue. Lines all over the US (water, gas, sewer) are in desperate need of repair.
the problem w/ gas it seeps into soil or voids, accumulates, travels along the outside of the pipe (path of least resistance) to open air.that's when things go BooM and SHTF.Utilities scramble to find shutoffs
(looking at dwg.'s hoping they were updated)Fire dept. doing all they can, utilities find shutoff(damn under the fire truck, move truck, hope valve not stuck).I can go on and on.

Re: Another Gas Explosion
another one:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41529771/ns/us_news-life/
I have put the 2 cities where the gas explosions happened, AND the reports from the cryoseism in this google map:
->click<-
How was the weather or the temperatures in Allentown & Hanoverton?
the Timing is spot on on all these events:
feb 10-11
my take:
frozen ground (and/or cryoseism) + cold weather + therefore more pipeline pressure + old-repair-worthy pipelines don't go well together

Re: Another Gas Explosion
UGI Crews are on the scene of another possible gas leak in Allentown. Just before 6:00p.m. Sunday evening, crews responded to reports of gas odor at 11th and Allen streets.

Re: Another Gas Explosion
Wow, not again. So was it because of freezing temperatures this time, what was the weather like?
