a reporter on the ground tells me he believes that Mubarak is in Sharm and that he normally goes there for the weekend so we should not read too much into it

yes it is multi-use as an airport. 9000ft in the average temperatures of Egypt is not enough for a fully loaded 747 for example, but you can get fair size military transports in there. Also the likes of the Presidential Airbus and 737s would have no problem. For a fully loaded 747 at the average ground temp there you would need about 13000ft of runway. Temperature on the ground has massive impact on takeoff distance as the air is less dense in hot air and more forward speed is required for lift.

All that said, it is still quite a large airstrip and you could get medium-large aircraft in there and obviously plenty of space for fighters or a presidential transport.
