Italy warns EU over influx of Tunisians
Italy has warned that an influx of Tunisians arriving on its shores could have devastating consequences for all European nations.
Italy is asking the European Union for about $135 million to help it cope with thousands of Tunisians arriving on its shores following Tunisia's uprising over unemployment and poverty.
About 5,000 would-be migrants have landed on the tiny island of Lampedusa in recent days, many of them Tunisians who say they are seeking work and a better life in Europe.
However, correspondents say they could include escaped convicts and members of the ousted regime of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali fleeing retribution.

Tunisia rejects foreign security to stem exodus
(CNN) -- Tunisia rejected the idea of Italian security forces deploying in the north African country to help fight illegal immigration, the country's state news agency reported Monday.
Tunisia "expressed her amazement at this position and asserts its categorical rejection of any interference in its internal affairs or to prejudice its sovereignty," TAP reported, citing an unnamed "authorized source at the Foreign Ministry."
The source said Tunisia was willing to cooperate with "sister countries" and aimed to discuss the issue "with complete transparency" with Italian officials soon, TAP said Sunday.
The top European Union foreign policy official, Catherine Ashton, arrived in Tunisia on Monday for talks, her spokeswoman said.
