Explosion / fire at petrochemical refinery in Texas

An explosion has rocked a refining facility in Mont Belvieu today, sending flames high into the air
The Mont Belvieu Police Department confirms an explosion about 11:45am at Enterprise Products on Sun Oil Road.
According to its website, "Enterprise owns a state of the art gasoline additive production facility that has been modified to produce isooctane, a motor gasoline octane enhancement additive used in reformulated motor gasoline blends to increase octane, and isobutylene."

Re: Explosion / fire at petrochemical refinery in Texas
The extreme cold of this recent winter storm in the south central US has made working conditions unusually hard for all industries.
Seals and gaskets that may have held up just fine for years may have given way in the cold.
I am just speculating, but there is much reason to think this is likely weather related.

I agree that it could well be something like that. It's almost certainly an industrial accident as opposed to anything more sinister.

Accidents like that one are an unfortunate reality of life here in the southern plains. Texas and Oklahoma are crisscrossed by oil and gas pipeline underground.
Most people have little idea how many thousands of miles of pipe run underneath our ground here.
Overall we have a remarkably good safety record -- it is just the sort of infrastructure that is vulnerable to weather extremes like the "hundred year" blizzard we just had.
