Carl Levin says Pentagon must investigate Army officer's psy-ops allegations
By Felicia Sonmez
Updated: 1:10 p.m. with comments from Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.)
The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee urged the Pentagon on Thursday to investigate allegations in a new Rolling Stone article that the Army used psychological operations on members of Congress to manipulate them into providing more troops and funding for the war.
Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said in a statement that he was "confident that the chain of command will review any allegation that information operations have been improperly used in Afghanistan."
Levin was among the members of Congress named in Michael Hastings's Rolling Stone article as having been potential targets of the psychological operations program.
Earlier Thursday, Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of the U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement that he was "preparing to order an investigation to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the issue."
