This young aspiring photo journalist (a kid really) gives what I think is the best account of how it was for journalists on the ground. His own story. Andrew Burton, remember that name.-..

---

Before I got to where the fighting was taking place, I noticed a pro-Mubarak supporter painting slogans over anti-Mubarak graffiti. I started to photograph him, but was suddenly grabbed from behind by a young man who also slapped his hand over my camera – he was very angry.

I immediately tried to walk away, out of the crowd. There was no reason for me to try to argue or fight, I figured I would reroute to Tahrir square through a different street. At this point, things got very hairy, very fast.

Within seconds, anti-Mubarak protestors saw me try to leave the crowd – they grabbed me and encouraged me to continue to walk towards to fighting. Pro-Mubarak supporters got very angry over this, and fighting broke out around me immediately.

Very suddenly 50% of the crowd started attacking me – kicking, punching and slapping. The other 50% (anti-Mubarak supporters) quickly encircled me to protect me. Five or six guys surrounded me and took many more blows than i did. We tried to move away, out of the crowd, but the crowd had gotten very large, very quickly – we only moved about 100 yards, at best. Movement was slow and clunky, we were stumbling through the people attacking us – forcing our way through the crowd. We were headed towards an Egyptian army tank and when we hit the it, the men positioned me with my back to the tank, squatting down. At this point, I was pinned. People continued to kick, punch and grab at cameras. Soldiers standing on top of the tank were waving pistols and screaming. I was fucking terrified. My shirt was ripped from my back, hands went into my pockets (the most they got was my CF cards), the men protecting me were looking at me screaming me, ‘you are safe, we are here for you, we will get you out of this.”

On Tuesday Suleiman told Egyptian newspaper editors that an escalation of the protests could unleash further repression. "We can't bear this for a long time," he said. "We don't want to deal with Egyptian society with police tools."

Suleiman warned of "the dark bats of the night emerging to terrorise the people" and said the alternative to negotiations on the government's terms was that "a coup happens". This would mean "uncalculated and hasty steps, including lots of irrationalities".

This is my eyewitness account of the the night of 2nd February 2011, in Tahrir Square, Cairo.
It was one of the bloodiest nights in Cairo, since the first day of protests. Anti-government protesters clashed with pro-Mubarak thugs in, and around, the square.
At least seven protesters died during the running street battles.

Amazing that that specific quote (in bold) was eliminated from every other rag. It is certainly a very dark ominous threat. But it is as if Suleiman is referring to forces even beyond his control. Who could they be? Who indeed! I have my guesses,,,,

Egypt Rolling Updates Wednesday 09 Feb - Page 31 Empty Egypt Analysis: How the US Should Be Engaging Cairo (Ezell)

Post by Strawberry Wed Feb 09, 2011 11:08 pm

Darrell Ezell, a specialist in inter-faith dialogue and public diplomacy, writes for EA:

The White House and the State Department's reaction to the crisis in Egypt indicates Washington is behind the curve on fulfilling its promise to engage Muslim communities throughout the Arab World. Its narrow focus on countering terror rather than grasping the social ramifications of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East region points to why insiders were caught off-guard by the events of the last two weeks.

But this is not a shock. Since 9/11, key US policymakers have been misreading the Arab World’s socio-political terrain. Reports focus on ensuring short-term American success in the region rather than on a building and sustaining of strategic relations with Muslim communities.

7:58am The Egyptian military has secretly detained hundreds and possibly thousands of suspected government opponents since mass protests, the Guardian newspaper reports.

The military has claimed to be neutral, merely keeping anti-Mubarak protesters and loyalists apart. But human rights campaigners say this is clearly no longer the case, accusing the army of involvement in both disappearances and torture ...

Egypt crisis: protesters reject smooth transition
Egypt's protest movement galvanised support from unions and the countryside as organisers rebelled against plans for a gradual transition overseen by the country's old guard.

On the 16th day of protests, street leaders were emboldened to take a more militant line against the regime than the opposition parties that have entered talks with Hosni Mubarak's vice President Omar Suleiman.

Mr Suleiman, who held more talks on constitutional reforms yesterday, has increasingly emerged as the focus of popular anger. He enraged demonstrators yesterday by warning that the regime would not tolerate prolonged demonstrations, stating that the options were either "dialogue" or "coup".

I can always count on your curiosity!

It is a guess... but the "dark bats" are paramilitaries employed and organized by the very wealthy -- mostly poor and uneducated, rural, landless, with a serf mentality, a loyalty only to their land owning master. When the police are too scared and stay home, and the Army is ineffectual, the secret police and these paramilitaries join forces. Without military discipline, they are a ruthless combination. They'll attack in the day and round up suspects at night. It is the last line of defense...

Just a guess,,, but I've seen it before...
