Witnesses said the shooting happened in Rock Place at about 1pm today.

An area of the seafront near Lower Rock Gardens has been cordoned off and officers from around the city called in for the operation.

Sussex Police confirmed a person had been shot and taken to hospital. The force issued a statement saying: "Police are attending an incident in the Kemp Town area of Brighton. Armed officers were deployed to the scene around lunchtime as part of a pre-planned operation."

quite right yes, there are specialist firearms response units that are available for operations where it is deemed there is a firearms risk, or to respond to emergency firearms incidents as they happen

It'll be interesting to see what kind of thing this turns out to be. The police said it was a pre-planned operation, which sounds like either a drug bust or an anti-terror op.

I'm fairly sure that the police would rather not shoot someone (especially after various incidents in the past).

Yeah, it happens maybe a few times a year.

Apparently he was wanted in connection with some armed robberies:

BBC News wrote:A man has died in hospital after being shot by police in the centre of Brighton.

Sussex Police said the shooting happened just after 1300 GMT in Rock Place.

The officers were on a pre-planned operation to find a man wanted in connection with a number of recent armed robberies, the force said.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said what appeared to be a black handgun had been recovered.

An IPCC spokeswoman said: "This will now be examined to establish whether it is real or an imitation weapon and whether it had been fired."
