Many experts on AJA is fearing a massacre today when millions will turn to presidental palace that is guarded by Repbulic guards that takes orders ONLY from Mubarak and would not listen to army.....

the expectation for today is an awful lot of unrest right across Egypt to start after prayers. Most journalists think it would have been better for Mubarak not to have even made the statement as it just made things worse

0905 GMT: Gaber Asfour, who resigned as Minister of Culture this week "for health reasons", has set out the real motives behind his departure.

Asfour noted that the situation had become so bad that no policeman would sit at the same table with former Minister of Interior Minister Habib El Adly, "who was behind the attack on the young demonstrators". He then said that he was "very surprised that [the new] government is not a government or a coalition of national salvation" but is still in the hands of the ruling National Democratic Party.

Sadly I do. This regieme in its arrogance and the condesending tone of both speeches last night leave little doubt they will do whatever to try to maintain their control

the military council has met, so the next statement is now imminent

there is a newstory i just caught in the car on my radio about Facebook being good for the Egyptian economy but it hasnt been announced I dont think, just talk at the moment. Have you heard anything?

They have tried to be really strategic with most of their info, although each time it has backfired on them! Were it not for the fact people are getting hurt and dying, the regime are acting like the Keystone Cops in their total ineptitude

Some U.S. officials responded sharply to that.

"President Mubarak's announcement that he will remain in power is deeply unfortunate and troubling," said Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona. "The voices of the Egyptian people are growing louder and more unified, and they are not demanding partial transfers of power or minor adjustments to the current government. They are calling for President Mubarak to step down."

Joel Rubin, a former State Department official under President George W. Bush, said Mubarak was directly referring to the United States on Thursday when he said he would not be pushed out by foreign powers.

"He's daring them," said Rubin, deputy director at the Washington-based National Security Network. "The White House will have a harder time messaging now because he's called their bluff."

Washington officials followed the unfolding drama in Cairo with hopeful expectation for a smooth transition — mixed with concern over the unpredictability of the developments.

"There is no question that what we are seeing happening in Egypt will have tremendous impact," Panetta told the House Intelligence Committee. "If it's done right, it will help us a great deal in trying to promote stability in that part of the world. If it happens wrong, it could create some serious problems for us and for the rest of the world."

The administration was also watching closely for developments that might affect U.S. aid to Egypt. A coup or other non-constitutional transfer of power could trigger a suspension in all non-humanitarian assistance. The U.S. is providing at least $1.5 billion annually to Egypt in military aid.

0907 GMT: State TV says Vice President Omar Suleiman has asked Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq to appoint a Deputy Prime Minister from the Council of Elders to "lead the national dialogue".

The Council of Elders is a group of self-appointed, prominent businessmen and lawmakers seeking a resolution between the regime and protesters.
