February 11, 2011: NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), best known for cutting-edge images of the sun, has made a discovery right here on Earth.

"It's a new form of ice halo," says atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley of England. "We saw it for the first time at the launch of SDO--and it is teaching us new things about how shock waves interact with clouds."

Ice halos are rings and arcs of light that appear in the sky when sunlight shines through ice crystals in the air. A familiar example is the sundog—a rainbow-colored splash often seen to the left or right of the morning sun.

"If you ever get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be at a rocket launch," he advises with a laugh, "forget about the rocket! Look out instead for halos."

That gave me goosebumps that was so cool. I have gotten to see a few live launches since I live and grew up in FL but I have never seen anything like that. I am usually too fixated on the shock waves and whats being launched to notice something like that. The whole family are big fans of anything "spacey" and go to the KSC at least once a year, we try to go when there is a launch of some kind.

I have been only one time to the KSC.. in jan 2000, when STS-99 launched.. We were in Florida on vacation..
...very impressed with the visit of the Space Center, that was a highlight

But we visited Kennedy Space Center one or two days before the launch.... Nevertheless, we saw the launch (a bit far away) while we were at the Universal Studios

The sun/light in Florida is really special for taking pictures

It really is awesome to see a launch, although you can't get real close anyhow. We have a pretty good sneaky spot that not many consider when trying to watch a launch.
We like KSC because its not all hyped up like Universal and the like. The kiddo doesn't like rides anyway so its fun for all. They do have a new shuttle launch simulator that is rockin cool though, just a simulator but at the end you are supposed to be in space and they open the bay doors and they have 3D view of Earth from orbit. It is fantastic, I could sit there for hours watching it.
