Thousands of protesters have gathered in the Tunisian capital for the second day to call on Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi to resign.

Protesters shouted slogans as security forces carrying automatic rifles looked on in Tunis on Sunday.

The protests come despite a ban on rallies. The Interior Ministry said on Saturday that mass demonstrations are forbidden under state of emergency laws and that protesters could face arrest.

Demonstrators oppose the new government as it still includes figures from the ousted regime. Protesters say they do not want any members of the ruling party in the post-revolution government.

Ghannouchi had earlier said that he would resign after elections within six months.

The latest protests end a stretch of relative calm in the capital since early February.

Tunisia has been under a state of emergency since a popular uprising last month that toppled the decades-long regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Ben Ali's 23 years of dictatorship, which was marred by repeated human rights violations and torture, ended earlier this month after weeks of street protests.
