Regime loyalists and plainclothes policemen attack protesters, mainly students, in Sanaa

Thousands of people have protested in Yemen for a fifth consecutive day to demand political reforms and the overthrow of the country's president.

They were met by pro-government supporters, who waded into Tuesday's protest in Sanaa with batons, sparking violent clashes in which three people were hurt, the AFP news agency said.

The loyalists were joined by plainclothes police wielding electric tasers, who sent the crowd of around 3,000 protesters, mostly students and rights activists, fleeing, witnesses said.

The demonstrators chanted slogans against Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Yemeni president, such as "Down with the president's thugs".

"What we are seeing is thousands of pro-government protesters, armed with batons, attacking the pro-democracy protesters and dispersing the crowd using violence," Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reported from the scene of the protests.

A heavy police force and about 2,000 pro-government supporters had positioned themselves at the city centre.

Our correspondent said that it was very difficult for international news organisations to operate.

"The situation is very tense - the government has been describing the pro-democracy protesters as traitors and accusing them of pushing foreign agendas," he said.

"But the [anger] of the pro-democracy protesters is on the rise and they are saying that they will continue their fight to bring down this regime and to bring about a change."

10.26am – Yemen:
The Associated Press news agency has a bit more on the protests in Yemen today (see 9.57am). According to AP, Yemen has sent 2,000 policemen into the streets to try to stem the demonstrations, which are in support of political reforms and against the president, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The policemen, including plainclothes officers, fired in the air and blocked thousands of students at Sanaa University from joining thousands of other protesters elsewhere in the capital. They are holding a sixth straight day of demonstrations ...

Witnesses say at least four protesters were wounded in scuffles with police on Wednesday.
Yemen is a conflict-ridden and impoverished nation. Its president has cooperated with the US in battling al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Yemen clerics urge unity government

A group of clerics in Yemen have called for the formation of a national unity government in order to save the country from chaos, Al Jazeera has learnt.

The influential figures are demanding a transitional unity government that would see the opposition represented in key ministries, followed by elections in six months.
They say the move would place Yemen in the same situation as Egypt and Tunisia, without suffering bloodshed.

Their comments come amid fresh clashes between pro- and anti-government protesters on Thursday in Sanaa, the capital.

Loyalists of the government wielding batons and daggers chased a group of protesters meeting at the city's university, witnesses said. At least five people were injured in the violence.

Demonstrators are also continuing a protest in the southern city of Taiz.

Isn't it amazing to watch? All the countries are using the same tactics and are very brutal in their crackdown on protesters.

This should teach us all something - I've said it a gazillion times before and say it again. All Dictators have the same playbook.

The whole Region is in upheaval....power to the people yes, but they're being slaughtered as we speak, and what's more disturbing, even in countries that are supported by the West and were thought as being "stable" and "civilized"!

TPTB being tested now, wonder when it all starts in Europe (besides Italy and Russia, who are already asking for their Presidents to resign as well) and also watching closely US. People are waking up and I fear we will see this type of uprising all over the world pretty soon. Also reports of Pakistan coming in as well...

If this happened in Europe and the Monarchys were threatened it could lead to civil war as there are still a lot of people that support them.

I agree with you about that 'rulebook' and its truly barbaric what they are doing to their people.

Hope all is well with you lovely Babsi Hugs

Yemen's president rejected demands that he step down and said Monday that the widespread demonstrations against his regime were unacceptable acts of provocation, though he renewed calls for talks with the protesters.

After a week and a half of marches that have left nine dead, President Ali Abdullah Saleh told a news conference that he ordered the army to fire at demonstrators "only in case of self-defense," the Associated Press reported.

Thousands of Houthis Take to Streets in Support of Anti-Government Protests

http://www.yemenpost.net/Detail123456789.aspx?ID=3&SubID=3171&MainCat=3

Thousands of Houthi loyalists took to the streets in Dhahyan district, Saada, in solidarity with the widespread anti-government protests, a day after the Joint Meeting Parties, the opposition, joined the popular and youth protests demanding the departure of the regime.

The Houthi demonstrators chanted the slogans of the other protests in Sana'a, Taiz, Aden and other cities including those demanding the ouster of President Saleh.

A spokesman for the Houthi Group said the thousands of Houthi protesters wanted to remove the Yemeni regime peacefully. They toured the streets and announced their support to the youth in other cities protesting the 33-year rule of Saleh, said Dhaifullah Al-Shami.

Today:

Demonstrations resume in Yemen

Protesters take to the streets of Sanaa for 12th day but Saleh insists he will step down after serving his term.

Anti-government protesters in Yemen have resumed demonstrations to try to force Ali Abdullah Saleh, the president, to quit, burning a car belonging to his supporters in the capital Sanaa, reports say.

Tuesday's protests broke out a day after a teenager was killed and four people wounded in a clash with soldiers in the country's southern port of Aden, according to witnesses.

Demonstrators, inspired by revolts in Tunisia and Egypt that have forced long-serving presidents out of power, have been protesting for 12 days against the rule of Saleh, in power since 1978.

But mounting pressure has so far yielded little result as Saleh insists he will only step down after national elections are held in 2013.

He said protesters demanding an end to his rule could not achieve their goal through "anarchy and killing".

He told a news conference on Monday that he had ordered troops not to fire at anti-government protesters, except in self-defence, though medical officials say at least 11 people have been killed in demonstrations.

Saleh's government was already weak before the protests, facing a southern separatist movement and disaffected tribesmen around the country.

He has been quietly co-operating with the US in efforts to battle an al-Qaeda branch that has taken root in Yemen, but his government exercises limited control in the tribal areas beyond Sanaa. The US gives Yemen military aid and training.

Only a matter of time before the Yemenis government collapses. When it does collapse it will really be susceptible to foreign influence.

The man problems are rooted in declining oil production and increased scarcity of water. Two factors that will only get exponentially worse over time.

Yemen protests swell as 180,000 join rallies nationwide

Protests in Yemen mushroomed Friday into the largest pro-democracy demonstrations in the nation's history, as more than 180,000 people marched in streets and squares calling for the ouster of longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

About 30,000 anti-government protesters, 10 times as many as have gathered in recent days, convened in front of Sana University here in Yemen's capital in peaceful, joyful demonstrations. More than 150,000 others convened in other cities and provinces across Yemen, according to local news reports.
