I am just checking in now and only read up to a post that mentioned rumors about Mubarak already being in Germany (I live there as US citizen), but it seems there is speculation here as well that Mr M may have landed. From what I gather, it's politicians that are pushing this option, all comments I've heard from normal folk are against it. Makes me wonder if there's a money connection with German pols, too! Link below is a (horrible) Googel translation from a German tabloid that usually breaks news (or rumors), BILD.de:
http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A//www.bild.de/BILD/politik/2011/02/08/aegypten-hosni-mubarak/checkt-er-in-dieser-schwarzwaldklinik-ein.html&langpair=auto|en
Hi there, where are you in Germany? Heidelberg? I am German - so I read the article in the Original version.
My mother said there were rumors that he's coming but so far those are just rumors. He went to this Schwarzwald Klinik before (btw, that Hospital had a series with the same name, about 20 years ago which I used to watch too, lol).
The Police doesn't like the idea because of the security issues and fear of many protests. People in Germany don't like the idea.
Also the european Human Rights Agencies would put him on trial, they've talked about it already.
Mubarak is "check mate"....that's another reason I think why he's staying here. He's cornered. I guess his wish has to come true (what he said in his speech).
Hi Babsi and for everyone else, I am in Hamburg, I have lived here since 1993, am mid-40, used to work as a journalist and then at 2 think tanks in DC and here. I, like Janey, do not want to give out more info than that because I have been threatened in person when some people found out I'm from the US and it is not funny. Kooks are everywhere it seems, I have posted here because it seems to not be full of psychos like "the place that shall not be named" ;-) That as preface, yes, that is the clinic and from an earlier article at BILD.de, they seem to be paving the way for a face-saving "extended medical stay" here. That article, which isn't current anymore, said that Mubarak has in the past few days only let very close personal people to see him in an "audience" because he does not want anyone to know how bad he is doing phyically and mentally. So I would not be surprised if they announce that he is here in the next 24 hours. BILD, as you know, is notorious, but they do have a knack for breaking stories before anywhere else, so I am keeping a close eye on it. Don't know what the German people will think if he comes here. I believe the German pols are quietly desparate to become a major player again in world affairs. When Germany was admitted as temporary member in the UN security council, there was a palpable simultaneous orgasm among politicians of all stripes here!

FoolOnTheHill wrote:Well, he may be right about the US Military, but I am really glad that the Egyptian military had enough human decency not to follow orders to shoot the protesters. As for the American military, I hope when the time comes they will not follow orders (for example to confiscate citizens guns in the US). Many in Nazi Germany were convicted for "following orders."Janey wrote:Mr.Clean wrote:Janey....
Two things I have to say.
I disagree with the statement the Egyptian army looks up to emulates the US army.
1) The US army does not refuse orders
2) The US army would not allow terrorists to try to over throw the Government
3) The US army would protect both government and civilian business/people
On an off topic....
The Issue with the Accusation of a US ship jamming wireless signal/internet in Lebanon
1) Proof
2) Why, current, tot he best of my knowledge, there is no fighting or no heavy fighting in Lebanon...yet.
3) If no war/battle...., why jam signals-IF TRUE!!!
heya, absolutely to those three items above with regard to the integrity of the US Army. I never would knock that. Personally I think the British and US military are the best in the world. It is true though that the Egyptian military look up to the US military, even if they dont have the same standards.
Your second part. I don't know that story. It didn't come from me. Can you point me to where that comes from please.
Nice to see you here incidentally!
Curious, isn't there something in the US Military Code of Conduct that a soldier can disobey an order on moral grounds?

Hi - I'm glad you're here and I get what you're saying!!
You're safe here - we're like family. I'm very happy to hear from you from Hamburg and true, Bild is something to take with a grain of salt yet sometimes to do get the news out before any other more reputable news source.
It's def something to watch. I'm sure you'll alert us if you hear anything.
Welcome and greet my country from me

They've had tanks there all along, but surely they increased, 30?? lol they're really scared to loose their last tactic, brainwashing the general and illiterate sheep.
Ok guys, I have to go for a while to do some domestic things. Will be back later to check on updates. If anything major happens, I'll be back here in a split sec.

Hey Zilla good to see you. I believe you are correct and that may have been a result or Nuremberg. I think we have the whole spectrum in the American military, from those who commit war crimes in Iraq to those who refuse to go. Let's hope that when things get "interesting" most will know and do the right thing.Godzilla85 wrote:

Funny - the protesters are peaceful. So what are the tanks there for? I wish they'd start pointing their tank guns towards the parliament and palace, wouldn't that be something?

A soldier can and must refuse an illegal order. They cant use the "just following orders" to avoid prosecution.

It's almost 7, an hour left till curfew. Yet the line to get into #Tahrir Sq is at least 2 km long and the crowds still chant...#Jan25
It's fantastic, people started leaving the security of the Sq. and gathering at the parliment. #Jan25 #Tahrir #Egypt
4 minutes ago via Twittelator from here
People need to take over parliament, not surround it and sit on the sidewalk. Been doing that for over a year. #jan25 #egypt #tahrir
Chanting "By Friday noon, we will be inside the palace" in front of parliament #tahrir #Jan25 #Egypt

Thanks to both of you for the input on that....The fact that our military is made up of volunteers I have a high amount of confidence that if our men and women are ever put into such a position..they will choose to do the right thing. I hope it never comes to that.

Hossam El-Hamalawy, who writes the Arabawy blog, just explained on Twitter that the Suez Canal workers "who started protests today are from subsidiary companies. Navigation not affected yet."

Ah ok, - but I could see this being true though.
Now on AJI has confirmed there's now a coalition formed of 12-20 people representing the youth and revolution and have begin talks with the "Wise Men". This should start going someplace.
Also friends told me they're talking about going to the Palace Friday!!!
I hope there's news stations set up along the way, I just worry about their security. But that would definitely make some major impact.
