heya, absolutely to those three items above with regard to the integrity of the US Army. I never would knock that. Personally I think the British and US military are the best in the world. It is true though that the Egyptian military look up to the US military, even if they dont have the same standards.

Your second part. I don't know that story. It didn't come from me. Can you point me to where that comes from please.

Well, he may be right about the US Military, but I am really glad that the Egyptian military had enough human decency not to follow orders to shoot the protesters. As for the American military, I hope when the time comes they will not follow orders (for example to confiscate citizens guns in the US). Many in Nazi Germany were convicted for "following orders."

Curious, isn't there something in the US Military Code of Conduct that a soldier can disobey an order on moral grounds?

I don’t know about moral grounds, Zilla, but a soldier can definitely refuse any illegal order. I have refused “orders” to do things that aren’t by-the-book and they can’t do anything about it – If I accept the order and get caught, however, it’s my arse, not my supervisor’s. Many people did things off the book to get things done faster – when it worked, no problem, otherwise they were punished pretty harshly.

I can’t speak for the Army – but I was in the Navy for five years and went to school and worked side-by-side with Marines the whole time. I can tell you right now that I think their behavior would resemble the military in Egypt. Orders or not I doubt our men would do anything illegal to fellow country men/women protesting peacefully against our corrupt gov’t. Most of our recruiting in the U.S. is from places like Montana and Oregon – people with family values and who work the country. The countryside out there is littered with billboards recruiting to the military. Since I moved to the East Coast I have never seen a billboard or recruiters walking around the malls and schools. The rich and politicians don’t want their kids in the military.

I have had this discussion in the military, and pretty much everyone would not follow illegal orders against their own people. My girlfriend’s two brothers are both Marines and would never harm a peaceful protestor. Now I can’t speak for the Army, as I said – nor can I speak for the troops that have been stationed overseas that may have become desensitized to violence. Or Blackwater (Xe) for that matter. That would be a scary situation over here.

Sorry for the rant. I wholly agree that the military does take orders extremely seriously. I also hope our men are watching the military in Egypt very closely and that WE are learning something from THEM =) In my experience, legal orders are followed or you are punished. Illegal orders are followed depending on the person. And what is and is not legal is very cut-and-dry in the military – there is a manual for everything and that is what you follow. I would hope that our military would behave similarly to that of the Egyptians – we’ll probably be discussing it on Little Sock News in a few years.

to those concerned about the US military shooting US citizens...

prob 80% would not shoot an unarmed innocent US civilian.. the other 20% are crazy who joined to kill.... most US military i know join for money,experience,family benefits...not all join to "serve their country"

I served in the UK Special Forces and there is no way, absolutely no way I would have fired on unarmed civilians regardless of orders. You put your conscience before country and take the consequences. Luckily, I was never in a conscience situation. I never had a moral issue with what I was asked to do. In fact, the crazies don't make it into the specialist branches of our military here. We used to call those types "army barmy NATO potatoes" and they were quickly weeded out of special forces selection. I never had any interest in rushing around with guns or sleeping in fields and all that malarkey. I would rather sit quietly and read Shakespeare. It was for that attitude that I was approached to engage in specialist duties.

I would think the vast majority of regular grunts here would not fire on the population either. In the Special Units we used to do lots of exercises based around civil uprising like what we are seeing now.

I have always admired the US Forces and place them on a par with us and worked with them many times in various adventures. Each team from the US I have worked with had always been good people.

You are right on! One of my best friends I grew up with is now a captain in the USMC, he is one of the gentlest people I have ever met in my life and continues to be. He served several combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, is there now in fact in the latter, and as an officer always goes out with his people on controls where they could and do come under fire. I don't like wars, but I don't have anything against the men and women that serve their countries. There is a difference.
