Watching all the footage is amazing. It is like looking at the UK 20-30 years ago.

Sounds like it was very side to side.. That was how the Easter quake was. Weirdest I've ever felt. Not typical up and down shake.. It was side to side.

I think because the tunnel is shut that is why the news crew cant get through to where the epicentre was.

Easter shake??
We had a tiny quake and it was side to side. I was sitting on the sofa and I could feel it move and the walls and windows creaked.

7.2 in Baja. I'm in San Diego. I actually love earthquakes.. But only if no one gets hurt.

So far 17 confirmed dead
People are believed to have been in the cathedral and in the spire when it went down. Pine Gould had 200 workers inside. It is unknown how many got out.

65 now confirmed dead.
TV just had a live interview with a woman who was still trapped in the Pine Gould building. She was under her desk and the floor above has collapsed on top of her.

Awww this is just so sad.
Its upsetting that there was loss of life this time and also the cathedral fell.
Its going to take them a long time to recover from this one.

Re: Earthquake 6.3 - hits Christchurch causing serious injury and deaths
If you look at USGS maps and the EQ site for New Zealand this quake wasn't on the main fault that runs through the island but close to the West Coast. Almost looks like it's at waters edge. I wonder whats out there? Volcano. ALso the quake was very shallow, only 2km. Normally here in Los Angeles a 6.3 would not cause as much damage because generally quakes are a bit deeper than that. I'm trying to find out some more about the logistics of it.
Infor from USGS
The February 21, 2011 South Island, New Zealand earthquake occurred as part of the aftershock sequence of the M 7.0 September 3, 2010 Darfield, NZ earthquake. The February 21st earthquake involved oblique-thrust faulting at the easternmost limit of previous aftershocks, and like the mainshock itself is broadly associated with regional plate boundary deformation as the Pacific and Australia plates interact in the central South Island, New Zealand.
This latest shock is significantly closer to the main population center of Christchurch, NZ, than is the September 2010 mainshock, in the vicinity of several other moderate (M 4 to 5) sized aftershocks located east of the main rupture zone of the 2010 event. There is no specific structure directly linking this event to the main fault of the 2010 mainshock, although there have been numerous aftershocks along generally east-west linear trends extending east from the end of the previous rupture. The north or north-east trends to the possible fault planes and the oblique thrust faulting mechanism as seen in the focal mechanism solution may reflect an association with similarly-trending faults previously mapped in the Port Hills region, just to the south of Christchurch.
Since the September 3, 2010 mainshock, there have been approximately 6 M>=5.0 aftershocks in the Christchurch region. The February 21st earthquake represents the largest aftershock to date, more that half a magnitude unit larger than the previous largest aftershock.

YIKES. Check this out. Caused Glacier to pop!
The earthquake that struck Christchurch has caused some 30 million tons of ice to break off from New Zealand's biggest glacier. Tour guides at the Tasman Glacier in the Southern Alps say the quake caused the ice to "calve" from the glacier, forming icebergs in the terminal lake. Tourists of Glacier Explorer boats say the icefall caused waves of up to 3.5 meters in height which swept up and down the lake for 30 minutes. The glacier is about 120 miles (200 kilometers) from Christchurch on the west coast. The powerful earthquake struck Christchurch on Tuesday, toppling tall buildings and churches, crushing buses and killing at least 65 people.

Christchurch a scene of incredible carnage: police
Updated 21 minutes ago
Rescuers have had to amputate limbs to free survivors from collapsed buildings in earthquake-hit Christchurch, police said this morning, estimating 100 people remained trapped in the rubble.
Superintendent Russell Gibson said bodies still littered the streets of New Zealand's second city after yesterday's 6.3-magnitude quake, and the death toll of 65 was set to rise significantly.
"There is incredible carnage right throughout the city," he told Radio New Zealand. "There are bodies littering the streets, they are trapped in cars and crushed under rubble."
Superintendent Gibson said the number of trapped "could be another 100, it could easily be more than that", adding the toll would rise from 65. "It will be significantly higher than that," he said.
More than 500 rescuers, including police and military personnel, pulled between 20 and 30 people from the debris overnight, toiling through the darkness, he added

They will be looking closely now at how they can improve the buildings to make them more earthquake proof.
Supposedly quake-proof buildings collapsed

Re: Earthquake 6.3 - hits Christchurch causing serious injury and deaths
Death toll now 98. Still 200+ missing.
The realisation that loves ones have perished is slowly sinking in for New Zealanders. Hope is fading fast and most areas the rescuers have been focussing on have now been classified as recovery sites.
