A blast has rocked a church in Egypt's border city of Rafah, as ongoing protests against embattled President Hosni Mubarak intensify across the country.


Reports say the explosion took place on the Egyptian side of the border near the Gaza Strip late on Saturday.

Columns of smoke were seen rising from the church, which was empty at the time of the attack.

No casualties or deaths have been reported so far. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

I cannot believe a church in egypt on saturday to be empty, their saturday is the sabbath day as far as i know. Info on it is dam hard to find. I got some conflicting sites first, the head read blast hit coptic church and article only covered the pipeline blast how weird.

this is confirmed, which is a major blow. The whole US thrust was to have Suleiman assume the leadership whilst elections were sorted

they are saying that they refuse to move the people by force and will ask only. This apparently, even if asked by the government to do so. They say that no matter what they are asked they will not use force against peaceful protesters

That isn't very many troops, what would they be used for?

What are you thoughts as to why they are sending platoons?

According to the article (I didn't link as not sure of all rules here), it is officially to evacuate US citizens of necessary.
